How to Check Any Florida Assisted Living Facility’s License and Inspections
Every licensed assisted living facility in Florida has a public record. Here’s how to read it in about five minutes.
Step by step
- Go to FloridaHealthFinder, run by Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA).
- Search for “Assisted Living Facility” and enter the community’s name or city (Cape Coral, Fort Myers or North Fort Myers).
- Open the facility profile. Note the license type (standard, plus any LNS, ECC or LMH specialty licenses) and licensed bed count.
- Under AHCA Reports, open the inspection reports and read the most recent two or three.
- Check for complaints, fines or legal actions, and review the emergency power plan summary. That matters during Florida hurricane season.
- Write down anything you want to ask about on your tour.
How to read an inspection report
Deficiencies are graded by severity. Class I and Class II are the most serious; Class III and IV are less serious. One minor citation isn’t unusual. What matters is a pattern: repeat citations for the same problem, or anything involving resident safety, medications or staffing.
Facilities can contest findings, so it’s fair to ask the community what happened and what changed. AHCA’s own inspection reports page explains more.
Questions to bring to the tour
- I saw a citation for [issue] in [month]. What happened, and what changed?
- What is your staff-to-resident ratio on days, evenings and overnight?
- How long have your administrator and director of nursing been here?
- Which specialty licenses do you hold, and when would a resident have to move?
We review these records for every community we suggest, and we’re happy to walk you through any report.
