Memory Care Placement in Cape Coral & Fort Myers
Guidance for families caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia, from someone who understands how hard this decision is.
When families start looking at memory care
- Wandering or getting lost, even in familiar places
- Leaving the stove on or doors unlocked
- Not recognizing medications, or taking them incorrectly
- Sundowning, agitation, or nighttime waking that exhausts caregivers
- A current assisted living community says it can no longer meet their needs
Florida’s new memory care license: what families should know
In May 2026, Florida enacted a law (Chapter 2026-102, Laws of Florida) creating a new memory care services license for assisted living facilities. Under the law:
- An ALF that serves memory care residents, or advertises memory care, Alzheimer’s care or dementia care, will need this license.
- The state must adopt the detailed rules by June 1, 2027, including staff training, admission criteria, safety requirements such as at least one awake staff member on duty at all hours, and building requirements.
- Facilities already licensed generally have six months after those rules take effect to obtain the license.
Until the rules are in place, many communities are still in transition. We’ll help you ask each community about its plans for the new license, and what it means for your loved one’s contract.
Questions we help you ask on memory care tours
- How many staff are awake and on duty at night?
- What dementia training do caregivers receive, and how often?
- How are exits secured, and is there safe outdoor space?
- What happens if behaviors change or care needs increase?
- Is memory care priced as a flat rate or by care level?
Cost
Memory care typically costs more than standard assisted living because of staffing and secure design. See our cost guide for current local figures.
